To think globally and act locally is to enjoy the best of both worlds.  To preserve the past while keeping a firm foothold in the present and an eye on the future is to practice the Yankee virtues of economy, thrift, and preparedness.

The work ethic of the world’s greatest economy began in small towns of New England, amid the rolling hills and swift-flowing streams that fueled the industrial revolution.  A melting pot of diverse peoples, cultures, and ideas helped make this nation strong; a trip through downtown Southbridge bears witness to the proud legacy that these peoples, cultures, and ideas have produced.

Thetown’s downtown district is a remarkable slice of American Victoriana, with most of Main Street listed on the National Historic Register and acclaimed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  One of the largest Romanesque churches in New EnglandNotre DameChurch, is also known for its bronze relief doors.

Once the home of teeming woolen mills and the world’s premier manufacturer of eyeglasses, Southbridge is today the site of a Department of Defense-inspired hotel and conference center.  A former All-AmericaCity and a recipient of the United States Main Street Award for revitalization of its downtown commercial district, the “Eye of the Commonwealth” also sits at the center of research and development in the burgeoning fiber-optics industry.

Downtown retains the look and feel of small-town history, even as it maintains a bustling commerce offering everything from pizza parlors and hair salons to florists, pharmacies, and specialty shops.  Banks, churches, law offices, and insurance firms line the streets, but there are also busy copy centers, coffee shops, travel agents, jewelry shops, antique shops, tax preparers, and retail clothing and music stores.

The local arts scene thrives as well, with the QuinebaugValley Council on the Arts and Humanities hosting art shows and exhibits, along with community theater productions.  A diverse collection of ethnic groups holds picnics, bazaars, fund-raisers, and food festivals celebrating a colorful local cuisine and burgeoning calendar of cultural events.  Summer Concerts on the Common, a Christmas Festival of Giving Trees, a Winter Carnival, and a canoe race every spring keep community spirit alive and growing.

Downtown also has one of the largest state-of-the-art libraries in the area. Day passes are available at the Tri-Community YMCA, which boasts a thriving membership that enjoys family programs and special events in the tradition of building strong bodies, minds, and spirits.
